Dorchester County Hurricane Expo and Family Fun Day at Ashley River Park

Saturday, June 3, 10:00 – 1:00pm

Dorchester County Parks and Recreation have teamed up with Emergency Management for this year’s Hurricane Expo. Learn about Hurricane Preparedness from local organizations and first responders and have some fun for the whole family! There will be cool emergency vehicles to check out, food trucks, inflatable, face painting and train rides around the pond!

Carnivorous Plant Bog Building at Ashley River Park

Saturday, June 3, 10:00 – 11:30am

Create and bring home your own carnivorous plant bog! Explore and learn all about carnivorous plants, how they eat and which species you can find and grow here in South Carolina. Jennifer Holstein is an avid carnivorous plant owner and grower and she will be on hand to share everything she knows about these unique and mysterious plants. Cost includes all supplies to build your own take home plant bog and participants are encouraged to work together or in a group.

Fee: $40 per bog and includes all supplies and materials

Rosebrock Park Nature Walk

Saturday, June 3, 8:00 – 9:30am

Join Master Naturalist and Summerville resident and teacher, Tara Bailey on a nature walk through Rosebrock Park. Tara will talk about all the wildlife, birds and flora and fauna that can be seen on a typical visit to the park. Program is free.

Family Fishing Clinics at Ashley River Park

Tuesday, June 6, 8:00 – 11:00am

Saturday, July 8, 8:00 – 11:00am

SCDNR instructor, Tom Lindenmayer, will be on hand to teach skills on how to tie fishing knots, how to rig a rod and reel, learn to cast, fish identification and more! The best part is everyone will get to try their hand at fishing. Kids from ages 4 to adults are welcome, so come out and play, enjoy the outdoors and make this a Family Fun Day! All equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Program is free with gate fee or park membership. Anyone 16 and over must have a freshwater fishing license.

Fun in the Sun Music and Movement at Davis-Bailey Park

Bubbles, music, dancing, nature walks, parachute games and more! Ebony "Bunny" St Pierre is offering a family friendly interactive and engaging music class complete with fine and gross motor musical movement, free dance time and lots of fun activities! Class is geared towards ages 0 - 8, but all ages are welcome. Class is free

 

Walking Meditation/Savasana at Ashley River Park 

Saturday, June 10, 9:00 – 10:00am 

As we begin our Transition towards Summer Solstice and the following warmer months, it can be helpful to find grounding in the environment around you. Our walking meditation throughout the park trails (with or without shoes) will provide a peaceful and mindful practice towards grounding and balance along the way. We will then settle into a quiet space for intentional Savasna to soak up your efforts and renew the mind/body connection. Program will be led by Quartermoon Yoga Studio owner, Cait Summers.

Fee:     $20 Dorchester County resident

            $24 Non County resident

YMCA Home Run Derby at Davis-Bailey Park

Sunday, June 11th, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Major League Baseball’s Jr, Home Run Derby (Jr. HRD) is a free event series for softball and baseball players, to showcase their hitting skills, and potentially earn a spot at the National Finals, which take place during the 2023 MLB All-Star Week. Participants will compete in 14u or 16u age divisions, with the cut-off date of July 20, 2023.

Porch Pickin’ at Ashley River Park

Friday, June 16, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Bring your chairs and blankets out to Ashley River Park for this family friendly event and enjoy some local live music, food trucks, beverages and family friendly games on the lawn in front of the park office. Paul Stone Project will be playing some of your favorite blues and classic rock tunes influenced by the Beatles, BB King, Eric Clapton and the Grateful Dead.  Program is included with your gate fee or annual park pass. No outside coolers allowed.

YMCA Pitch, Hit and Run at Davis Bailey Park

Sunday, June 18th, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) events provide boys and girls an opportunity to showcase their baseball and softball skills, with the opportunity of earning a chance to attend and compete for a Championship during the 2023 MLB World Series! Approved local events give youth organizations an opportunity to provide a free and high quality experience for their participants. The program is a free event for boys and girls, and consists of a series of movements that are important in baseball and softball. Participants will compete in either 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, or 13-14 age division, with the age cut-off November 15, 2023. Based on their scores, participants will advance from local events to a Team Championship and then to the National Finals hosted at the World Series. Register here.

Center for Birds of Prey

Tuesday, June 20th, 10:00 - 11:00am 

Center for Birds of Prey will swoop into Ashley River Park with some of their feathered friends and may even do a flight demonstration. Program is free with gate admission or annual park pass.

NFL Flag Football at Davis-Bailey Park

Season runs from July 10th - August 26th

Divisions for Micro, 6u, 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u

Players will receive an NFL brand reversible team jersey and flag belt. 

Outdoor Nature Explorers Camp at Ashley River Park

July 10 -14, 9:00am-12:00pm

Ages: 6 – 11

Explorers will learn about insects, park and pond wildlife, flora and fauna and all things nature in this outdoor camp at Ashley River Park with Master Naturalist and Summerville teacher, Tara Bailey.  

Cost is $100 a week for Dorchester County residents and $150 for non-County residents.

Gerry the Great’s Great Pirate Bubble and Water Show

July 12th, 10:00 – 11:00am

Gerry the Great will sail into Ashley River Park on his pirate ship with his water cannons ready for an interactive water battle and bubble show. Participants are encouraged to wear a bathing suit, but there will also be a water free zone for those that do not want to get wet. Program is included with gate fee or park pass.
